Dear St. Odilia community,
On behalf of the Joyful Noise Children’s Choir, I wish to extend our most heartfelt “Thank You” to all of our parish family for your support and prayers during this past January 8th weekend. The choir was invited by the City of Tucson and the Diocese of Tucson to participate in two separate interfaith memorial services held to commemorate the one year anniversary of the Tragedy in Tucson.
On Saturday, January 7th, Joyful Noise sang “This Little Light of Mine” in front of hundreds of Tucsonans who gathered @ Kino Stadium for the closing ceremony of the day’s events sponsored by Beyond. The girls braved the chilly breeze and sang their hearts out as the community sang along.
Sunday morning, January 8th, the children sang beautifully at the Family Mass. It was a very emotional mass. The children sang “God Bless America” and “This Little Light of Mine.” At 10:11 am we all reflected in silence as the church bells pealed and beautiful music carried on throughout our community.
At 1 pm, Joyful Noise gathered at St. Augustine’s Cathedral for a beautiful interfaith service that was highlighted by amazing music, multi-cultural prayers and reflections, dancers and roses to remember those who died. Also in attendance was Gov. Jan Brewer. The sound of “This Little Light of Mine” filled the Cathedral as the girls sang to remember and honor Christina-Taylor Green †. We were blessed to be a part of this all.
With grateful hearts,
Joyful Noise Children’s Choir

The See’s Candies Fundraiser is just in time for Valentine’s Day. Money and order blanks must be turned in by today, February 5th. It will be handed out on February 12th after all of the Masses.
We are collecting new or good used white socks for a nurse at the medical center in Nogales. They treat many cuts, bruises and infections on the feet of our migrant brothers and sisters. We will be collecting until April. There are boxes in the Church vestibules, or bring to the Christina-Taylor Green Ed Center office or the parish office. Thanks again for helping.

The Faith Rejuvenation Committee will be offering classes on the New Testament. Our main facilitator will be Jean Hill. She has an extensive background both in education and employment. Jean taught the New Testament in the Diocese of Syracuse (NY) and Diocese of St. Augustine (FL). Jesus asked Peter, “Who do you say that I am?” He asks us the same question. We will look for that answer as we start with the Gospel of Matthew, Ch. 13.
In an effort to accommodate everyone’s schedule, we will hold two (2) sessions: Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings. Please register for either the morning or evening class by contacting Anne Ferry @ 297-7271, ext. 210, no later than January 17th. The class dates will be as follows:
Tuesday mornings - January 31; February 7, 14, 21, 28; March 6, 20 & 27
Thursday evenings - February 2, 9, 16, 23; March 1, 8, 22 & 29

If you have disconnected your home
phone and now only use your cellular
phone, please call the office or use the
form located in the back of the bulletin to
inform us of the phone number that we
can get in touch with you.
Thank you very much for your
cooperation.
St. Vincent de Paul here at St. Odilia
needs people that are willing to take time
out of their busy lives to help those in
need. Our St. Vincent de Paul society
has dwindled to just a few people, and
we are in desperate need of some new blood.
All that is required is a willingness to meet with needy
people and help them in whatever way we can. Training
will be provided. Being familiar with Excel spreadsheets
is a bonus, as that is how we keep our records.
If you
are interested, please call the parish office at 297-7271.

Volunteers are a wonderful gift to our
parish. If there is a need that can’t be
accomplished in a parish due to a shortage
of staff “call a volunteer”.
We still have a need for more Eucharistic ministers and
lectors. Please call the office to let us know if you are interested.
We can train you individually or as a group. Thank
you for considering to serve your parish in this ministry.
We have a need for two or three volunteers to work
with us at La Canada Care Center on Fridays. We’re
there from about 9:30 am to 11:00 am. Three Fridays
a month we have Mass, and when a priest is not available
we have a Communion Service.
What we do, is bring the residents from their rooms to
the dining room where Mass is held. If you can help
us please call Gloria Ruiz 297-2578.
The biblical story of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac is a frightening one. How could God ask this of him? The ultimate lesson of the story is that God did not want a child to be sacrificed. This story points to issues that we, as parents, can consider today. Although our culture does not condone the physical sacrifice of children, it does require more and more from them in order that they are seen as valuable in the world.
SOME QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:
What expectations do we have of our children? Do we insist on academic or athletic excellence beyond their capacity or interest? Do we insist that our way of doing things is the only way our children should follow? The above excerpt was taken from 52 Simple Ways to Talk with Your Kids about Faith. For more tips on how to start a conversation with your child on this theme and many more, go to www.LoyolaBooks.org/52SimpleWays.

Please keep our Journeysongs hymnal books looking new by taking care, to place them inside the slots behind the pews vertically right side up, rather than horizontally on their sides. This ensures that the binding stays in place. Also, please remember to leave the prayer cards inside the hymnals for all to use. If you like our new prayer cards and would like some of your own, they are now available in the parish office, four cards for a dollar. Thank you for your cooperation.
